Severe Weather Damage
  • Each year severe weather incidents are a major threat to our communities which results in hundreds of deaths and billions of dollars in damage.

  •  90% of all Federally declared state of emergencies are weather related.

  • Community preparedness can reduce the impact saving lives and reducing property loss.

About Central Illinois SKYWARN®:

  • 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
  • 25+ all-volunteer group from a multi-county area and many professional backgrounds including emergency response personnel;
  • Trained National Weather Service Storm Spotters;
  • Team members are compliant with the National Incident Management System (NIMS) which ensures a seamless integration into the Incident Command System (ICS); and
  • Licensed amateur radio operators.

During severe weather events, Central Illinois SKYWARN® not only provides severe weather assessment and reports but also performs post-event debris assessment which is an invaluable resource for both the National Weather Service and the local public safety agencies.

Since certain members may be out in the community as a severe weather event is occuring, we are well positioned to engage in initial storm and debris assessments. These timely assessments are reported to the National Weather Service Office in real-time to better facilitate situational awareness.

Central Illinois SKYWARN® community outreach program:

Central Illinois SKYWARN has the distinct designation of being a Weather Ready Nation Ambassador. As a WRN Ambassador we have developed a community preparedness outreach program to help mitigate and prepare communities in the event of a severe weather event. Unlike most "Storm Spotter" teams, Central Illinois SKYWARN® is out in the community before an incident occurs. Some of our steady-state activities include but not limited to:

  • Assisting with severe weather preparedness planning
  • Consulting with municipalities completing their Storm Ready program applications; and
  • Providing training and education (severe weather presentations).

Central Illinois SKYWARN® has also conducted presentations and provided training seminars for other Storm Spotters thougout the area to increase awareness and education. Some of our operational procedures have even been adopted by other groups which adds consistency across the board in regards to severe weather assessments.
