The National Weather Service encourages anyone with an interest in public safety to join the SKYWARN® program. Volunteers include police and fire personnel, dispatchers, EMS workers, public utility workers and other concerned private citizens. Individuals affilitated with hospitals, schools, churches and nursing homes or who have a responsibility for protecting others are also encouraged to become a trained spotter.

This training is free of charge and will cover the following topics:

  • Basics of thunderstorm development
  • Fundamentals of storm structure
  • Identifying potential severe weather features
  • Information to report
  • How to report information
  • Basic severe weather safety

This class will also provide an opportunity for those who may have missed the regularly scheduled class held in the Spring or for those who have not taken the class within the past 2 years. To be classified as a trained Storm Spotter, the National Weather Service requires individuals to attend this training every two-years. Local agencies and other non-governmental organizations that provide severe weather observation and reporting may have additional training guidelines; you should consult those entities for additional training information.

Members of the Pleasant Plains Emergency Management Agency and the Central Illinois SKYWARN® Team will be on hand before and after the class to answer any questions participants may have on how to get more involved in keeping our communities safe before, during and after severe weather events.
